Masterclass: Cross-Examination and Re-Examination (Thursday 19 June 2025)

Do you feel ready to cross-examine your opponent’s witness? Are you confident in your ability to re-examine your witness to maintain their credibility?

Cross-examination requires strategic thinking and precision. When executed effectively, it can uncover the truth, challenge the opposition’s evidence, and shape the narrative in favour of your client. Consider your strategy: What do you hope to achieve through cross-examination? How will you phrase your questions to elicit the desired responses or highlight inconsistencies?

Re-examination offers your witness the opportunity to clarify their testimony and maintain their credibility. By presenting a thorough re-examination, you can address ambiguities and reinforce key points, ultimately steering the narrative back in your favour. Listening during cross-examination is crucial, as you are limited to addressing only what was asked. Consider: Should you re-examine? What can you gain through re-examination? How will you phrase your questions to restore your client’s credibility or resolve ambiguities?

Join us for an interactive online two-hour masterclass, led by advocacy expert and trainer Fiona Donnelly. This workshop will guide you through the intricacies of cross-examination and re-examination, focusing on the relevant rules, questions, and techniques, including different questioning styles for various types of witnesses. This masterclass includes detailed talks on strategy, essential skills, practical drills, and hands-on advocacy practice. You will be given a pre-prepared case study to apply your learning to, and will receive personalised feedback from Fiona.
